《Master’s and PhD Miner》has received a surprisingly fitting new life-system update: romance is no longer a one-time choice made at the beginning of a run. Players now start out single, can stumble into a relationship during the game, go on scheduled dates, and even get dumped if they repeatedly fail to show up.
The change grew out of a suggestion to add a “single” status to the game. It is a particularly recognizable state for a game about highly educated people buried under coursework, papers, and deadlines. The result is a relationship system that can make the run easier in some ways, but also adds another timer to keep track of. Even the first level is not exactly a free pass—it can take several attempts to clear.

The central rule remains unchanged: graduation comes first. Courses, credits, papers, and reading are the things that actually move the player toward completing the degree. Romance may improve morale, but ignoring academic objectives is still the fastest way to lose the game.

How the relationship system works
Starting out single
Every new game now begins in the single state. While single, the player does not receive date events, but each level continually creates opportunities to “find a partner.” Negative events also deal 1.3 times their normal morale damage in this state.
The relationship state is not saved. Starting a new game always resets the player to being single.
Finding a partner
The “Let’s Fall in Love” item remains on the map for 10 seconds after appearing. When the countdown ends, it disappears and immediately respawns at another random location, preferably somewhere different from its previous position. The item displays its remaining time, so the player can decide whether it is worth breaking away from more important tasks.
If a mentor event interrupts the player while the item is being collected, that opportunity is cleared and a new one is generated. After a breakup, the player also returns to the single state and receives a fresh chance to find someone.
Being in a relationship
Catching the “Let’s Fall in Love” item changes the state to partnered and immediately restores 10 morale. While partnered, the morale damage from negative events is reduced to ×0.75.
There is also a 1% chance for another “Let’s Fall in Love” item to appear while already in a relationship. This represents the relationship warming up rather than starting over. Collecting it grants 5 morale and resets the missed-date counter.
After collecting the “Temporary Mentor Guidance” item, the player will also be protected from another mentor interruption for a short period.
Dates are another deadline
Date events are scheduled according to the level’s global timer. The first date can occur randomly within the first 0–10 seconds of a level. After that, another date may be triggered during each 20-second window.
When a date starts, 5 seconds are deducted immediately. A temporary “Date” item then appears somewhere in the mine, and the player has 12 seconds to collect it.
A successful date restores 12 morale. If current morale is below 30, it grants an additional 5 points. Missing the date applies the relationship-state damage multiplier, removes another 10 seconds, and increases the missed-date count by one.
Three missed dates mean a breakup
After three consecutive missed dates, a breakup confirmation dialog appears, using image/分手了.png.
Confirming the breakup will:
- Return the player to the
singlestate. - Reset the missed-date counter.
- Remove an additional 20 morale.
- Stop the partner-event timer.
- Immediately generate a new opportunity to find a partner.
In other words, getting into a relationship is not a permanent upgrade. It can reduce morale damage and provide useful recovery, but it also creates a new obligation that can cost both time and morale if neglected.
Other changes in the update
The mobile interface has been rearranged to make the game easier to operate on a phone. The duplicated information button has been removed, and the game area now uses a tall, vertical layout that fills as much of the available width as possible while retaining a small margin.
Each level now dynamically generates 3–5 gym items. Using one costs 3 seconds, but briefly increases the speed at which the player is pulled back. Several event coefficients, skin rewards, and fund rewards have also been adjusted after inconsistencies were found in the previous values.

The new system makes the game’s personal life as unstable as its academic schedule: one moment there is a chance to escape singlehood, the next there is a date countdown taking priority. Still, no matter how well the romance mechanics are handled, the winning strategy remains the same—collect the credits, finish the papers, and graduate before anything else gets in the way.
